On our bedroom ceiling, we have some of those plastic, glow-in-the-dark solar system cut-outs. Kaylyn loves looking up at the "stars" and always asks questions before nap time. So I have been giving her a few astronomy lessons...
Kaylyn: "Mommy, how do you spell "Earf"?"
Mommy: "It's E-A-R-T-H."
Kaylyn: "Oh.... And why isn't Pluto a planet any more?"
Mommy: "Well, Pluto is REALLY far away. We used to think it was a planet. But then the scientists made telescopes that were big enough to really see that far away, and they discovered that Pluto wasn't actually a planet after all."
Kaylyn: "Is it REALLY far far away?"
Mommy: "Yes, it's really, really, really, far far far far away!"
Kaylyn: "Does Julie live on Pluto?"
Mommy: "No, Julie doesn't live on Pluto! She lives in Arizona, that's here on Earth like us."
Kaylyn: "Oh... What planet does Grammy live on?"
...and that my friends, is the question we've all been wondering...
Just kidding Mom! ;-)
Actually, they call Pluto a "Dwarf Planet" and are considering reinstating it's "planet" status. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, well that is good news. I was bummed that Pluto was not included in our planet set. Pluto will always be a planet in my heart! :)
